A sleep education programme raises young archers' scores
1 study · 10 archers measured
The summary today
There is one study, and score was not its main question. At an Indian army sports institute fifteen adolescent archers went through a year of sleep education, and in the ten who shot on both occasions the training score rises from 1268 to 1291 out of 1440 (p = 0.018). Over a year of training a teenager's score rises without any intervention, and the study has no control group followed over the same period. The comparison is with eight archers of the same age and training from the year before, put together retrospectively on a 720-point round: they went from 630 to 647, a difference that is not significant (p = 0.269) but, in proportion, slightly larger than that of the group with the intervention. The link with sleep also remains to be shown, because after the intervention the teenagers fall asleep sooner but their hours of sleep and daytime sleepiness do not change. Distance and bow type are not given.

In practice
With teenagers it is often said that those who sleep well shoot better, and that putting their evenings in order soon shows on the target.

The comparison is put together retrospectively: eight archers of the same age and training, in the previous year and with their usual training only, go from 630.25 ± 46.7 to 647.25 ± 20.7 out of 720 (p = 0.269, d = 0.42). It is not randomised, it uses a different round, and in proportion this group had improved slightly more than the one with the intervention.

- 2019 Reported An Indian pilot study arrives on adolescent archers at an army sports institute, followed through a year of sleep education. The ten who shoot in both sessions go from 1268 to 1291 points out of 1440 in their training score (p = 0.018). Eight archers of the same age and training, followed the year before with their usual training only and retrieved retrospectively, had not improved significantly, but on a 720-point round and, in proportion, slightly more than the first group. It is a before-and-after design with no control group over the same period, on ten teenagers who grow and improve over a year anyway: reported.
