A few nutrition education sessions change how an archer eats and raise blood glucose in competition
1 study · 8 archers measured
The summary today
The only attempt comes from a Brazilian master's thesis on eight national-team archers, four men and four women, none of whom was being advised by a nutritionist. Five weekly one-hour sessions on nutrients, meal timing, recipes, hydration and supplements, plus an individual consultation with a nutritionist: afterwards the men increase almost every macronutrient at breakfast and at their snack, the women change only the protein at breakfast, and in a half competition at 70 and 90 metres blood glucose stays higher at every point measured than in the half competition before. Salivary cortisol, on the other hand, does not move. There is no control group, the values appear only in figures, the food diary covers three days and the score is not among the outcomes: a before-and-after design like this stops at reported, and it does not yet say whether the archer shoots better.

In practice
Archers are told to eat little and often during a competition to keep their blood glucose steady, but usually nobody teaches them how.

8 Brazilian national-team archers, 4 men and 4 women, not advised by a nutritionist: a half competition at 70 and 90 m before, and another after six weekly sessions (five one-hour talks and an individual consultation). After the intervention blood glucose measured with a portable meter is higher at all three points, at rest, after 70 m and after 90 m. No control group, values only in a figure, master's thesis.

The same 8 archers, a three-day food diary for breakfast and snacks before and after the intervention: the men increase almost every macronutrient at both meals, except fat at the snack; the women change only the protein at breakfast. With four athletes per sex, the difference between men and women can be described but not interpreted.

Context Archers Published later
The same 8 archers: salivary cortisol, collected before and after the two half competitions, shows no difference between before and after the intervention at any point. Nutrition education changes blood glucose, but not the stress marker the same work uses to describe the competition.

Status history
- 2021 Reported Eight Brazilian national-team archers, none of them advised by a nutritionist, attend six weekly nutrition education sessions and then repeat a half competition: blood glucose stays higher at every point measured, the men change breakfast and snacks more than the women, while salivary cortisol does not move. There is no control group and the values appear only in a figure, so a before-and-after design like this goes no further than reported.
