Each circle is a study: its position gives the year, its row whether it is for, against or context, its size how many participants it measured. Light circles are studies on other populations or without archers.

There is a single study, on two Chinese university classes of complete beginners, twelve students each, not randomly allocated, followed for eight weeks. In the test of assembling and dismantling a training recurve bow, held in the second week with a ten-second penalty for each correction by the teacher, the class that also studied on an online platform took 96.8 seconds against 82.9 for the traditional class, and on the range it hesitated more and needed more corrections. The result runs against expectations also because in the same study the blended class shot better, 46 points against 36.5 in the target test, with fewer execution errors. The authors put it down to a fixed sequence that is better learned from the teacher than from several channels at once, but the study does not test this. The most useful figure for anyone teaching is the order of magnitude: a beginner in the second week assembles and dismantles a bow in about a minute and a half.

In practice

Beginners' courses take it for granted that videos and material to watch at home save time on the range, above all on procedural things such as assembling the bow, stringing it and getting the equipment ready.

24 Chinese university students, complete beginners, in two classes not randomly allocated: in the second week, best of two attempts with a 10-second penalty for each correction by the teacher, assembling and dismantling the bow takes 96.83 ± 17.18 seconds in the blended class and 82.92 ± 14.16 in the traditional one (t = 2.165, p = 0.041); mean across all 24 students 89.9 ± 17.0 seconds. On observation the blended class is slower, asks for corrections more often and stops to hesitate.

In the same study, at the end of the eight weeks, the blended class does better on everything else: 46.00 ± 8.98 points on the target against 36.50 ± 11.12 (p = 0.031), 13.25 against 11.25 in the teacher's technique mark (p = 0.046) and 8.75 against 11.00 execution errors (p = 0.027). Assembly is the only measure on which it does worse.

In the blended class's anonymous questionnaire, 12 out of 12 returned, 92 per cent favour the format and 75 per cent say they feel continuity from one lesson to the next; on the platform the mean is 84 out of 100, with 29 assignments completed out of 30.

Status history

  1. 2023 Reported The first and only study comes from a Chinese university: two classes of twelve complete beginners, not randomly allocated, over eight weeks, one on the traditional course and one with material and assignments on an online platform. In the second-week assembly and dismantling test the blended class takes 96.8 seconds against 82.9 (p = 0.041), and hesitates more, while on the target it shoots better. It is a single study on twenty-four people, and the claim is worded in the direction of its result: reported.
