Archers credit music with only a moderate effect on their motivation and performance

1 study · 36 archers measured

There is a single survey, from 2022, of thirty-six Turkish traditional archers who, during the finals of the national championship, were asked to listen to music and to fill in a scale on its effects there and then, and it measures an opinion, not a performance. They credit music with a mid-scale effect, a median of 2.94 out of five overall and 3 for motivation, and only ten of the thirty-six, 28 per cent, listen to it in training. Those who do listen credit it with far more effect on motivation, 4.16 against 2.46, which is what one would expect from a question put this way, and those who train more hours a day credit it with less, with a correlation of -0.42 on the total. The other differences, favouring those with a university education and those who train in smaller centres, come from subgroups of seven, fifteen or twenty-one people and from many comparisons run together, so they should be read as hints; between men and women and across income bands nothing changes. The journal has questionable editorial standards: the registry reports the survey but does not use it to decide the status, which remains not studied.

In practice

Some archers train with headphones on to find their rhythm or to shut out the rest of the range, and some say the right music keeps motivation up through long sessions of repeated arrows.

Venue with questionable editorial standards: this result does not count towards the status. 36 Turkish traditional archers (16 men and 20 women) listen to music during the finals of the national championship and fill in, there and then, a scale on its effects in sport: medians out of five of 3 for motivation, 2.92 for physical strength and performance, 3 for psychological resilience and 2.94 overall. Only 10 of the 36, 28%, listen to music in training.

Those who listen to music in training credit it with more effect on motivation, 4.16 against 2.46 (U = 41, p = 0.001), and on the total, 3.41 against 2.41 (p = 0.033), across 10 archers against 26. More training hours a day go with a smaller perceived effect: correlations of -0.38 for motivation, -0.39 for performance, -0.39 for psychological resilience and -0.42 for the total.

The subgroup differences: those with a university education (21) credit music with more effect than those with a high school diploma (15), 3.08 against 2.14 on the total (p = 0.021); those who train in small centres (7) credit it with more motivational effect, 4.20 against 2.65 in large cities and 2.58 in medium ones (p = 0.048). No difference between men and women (p = 0.269) or across income bands (p = 0.465), and the effect on psychological resilience does not change with sex, education, listening in training, income or training place: it moves only with training hours.

Status history

  1. 2022 Not studied The first and only data: thirty-six Turkish traditional archers listen to music during the finals of the national championship and fill in, there and then, a scale on its effects in sport. They credit music with only a moderate effect, a total median of 2.94 out of five, and just 28 per cent listen to it in training. Those who do listen credit it with much more effect on motivation (4.16 against 2.46) and those who train more hours a day credit it with less; there is no difference between men and women. It is a stated opinion, in a venue with questionable editorial standards: the registry reports it but does not use it to decide the status, which remains not studied.
