Tuning the bow with a structured method raises the score
2 studies · 42 archers measured
The summary today
There is a single study in favour on this question, and it cannot separate the bow from the archer. In 2022 twenty-four Indonesian club archers, shooting in the standard bow division, did sixteen tuning sessions, three a week, in two groups of twelve: with walk-back tuning the mean score at 40 metres went from 443.9 to 547.0 points (p = 0.009), with paper tuning from 419.6 to 435.1 (p = 0.002). No group, however, shot the same sessions with the bow left as it was, and in the walk-back group the lowest score rose from 188 to 424 while the highest moved only from 621 to 639: much of the gain may come from the archers who started very low, from the extra shooting or from getting used to the test. In 2026 the same research group added a control group in a study on the compound, and the controls improved too, from 213.7 to 236.2 points against a rise from 243.6 to 272.5 in the treated archers. The treated archers gain a little more, but the two groups were never compared with a test, the t values are identical and the paper's two tables give different figures for the same measures. What can be said today is that a structured tuning process has been followed by higher scores, not that it produced them.
Also phrased as: "bow tuning"; "walk-back tuning"; "paper tuning"; "tuning the bow for score"; "a tuned bow scores more"; "tuning by feel"; "paper tuning and score"; "compound bow tuning"; "clean hole through paper"; "tuning a compound to score more"
In practice
The common view is that an untuned bow costs points even to the most consistent archer, and that adjusting it by feel is not enough: you need a procedure, walk-back, paper tuning down to a clean hole or bare shafts, repeated until the arrows group where they should. On the compound it is taken for granted.

12 male Indonesian club archers, standard bow division: after 16 walk-back tuning sessions, three a week, the score on the 40-metre test rises from 443.92 ± 152.01 to 547.00 ± 81.98, a mean gain of 103.08 ± 113.81 points (t = −3.138, p = 0.009). The minimum goes from 188 to 424, the maximum from 621 to 639. There is no group without tuning.

In the same study, the other 12 archers do 16 paper-tuning sessions: the score at 40 metres rises from 419.58 ± 112.64 to 435.08 ± 112.78, a mean gain of 15.50 ± 12.81 points, small but consistent (t = −4.192, p = 0.002). The difference between the two methods was never tested statistically.

30 elite Indonesian compound archers aged 19 to 22, 15 with the bow adjusted at every session with a device combining a press and a draw board until a clean tear on paper, 15 controls, over 16 sessions: over 36 arrows at 30 metres the treated archers go from 243.60 to 272.54 points (table 6) or from 296 to 340 (table 5), the controls from 213.70 to 236.23 or from 288 to 312, with the same t = 8.892 in both groups and no test between them. The treated archers gain a little more in both tables (+28.9 against +22.5, +44 against +24), but the comparison was never made, and the controls' improvement means the gain cannot be put down to the tuning: that is why it is context rather than supporting evidence.

The authors say the device increased arrow speed, but in the treated group the value goes from 13.63 to 10.44 in table 5 and from 13.63 to 15.90 in table 6. No unit is given and the instrument declared for speed is the tuning paper.

Status history
- 2022 Reported The first study arrives. Twenty-four Indonesian club archers, in the standard bow division, do sixteen tuning sessions, three a week, in two groups of twelve: with walk-back tuning the mean score at 40 metres goes from 443.9 to 547.0 points (p = 0.009), with paper tuning from 419.6 to 435.1 (p = 0.002). There is no group shooting the same sessions without touching the bow, so it is not known how much of the gain comes from the tuning and how much from the training, from familiarity with the test or from the archers who started very low (the lowest walk-back score rises from 188 to 424). A single study on archers, with a before and after, in a regional journal: reported.
- 2026 Reported The same research group tests a device combining a bow press and a draw board on thirty compound archers, fifteen treated and fifteen controls, over sixteen sessions. The treated archers go from 243.6 to 272.5 points over 36 arrows at 30 metres, but the controls improve as well, from 213.7 to 236.2, and the two groups are never compared with each other; another table in the paper gives different figures for the same measures, and in both the treated archers gain a little more, without anyone having tested it. It is the first control group on this question, and it points the same way as the doubt raised in 2022: sixteen shooting sessions seem to raise the score without the device as well, although we are not told what the controls did or how their bows were set up. The study does not add a second result in favour: the status stays at reported, and the share that can be put down to the bow is still to be measured.
