A shooting shirt with built-in chest guard and arm guard is judged comfortable by archers
1 study · 6 archers measured
The summary today
There is a single paper, and it is product development more than a test. At an Indonesian club two researchers sewed a foam chest guard and a synthetic leather arm guard into a shirt and had it assessed. Two expert judges gave it 83 and 88 out of 100, with the archery expert's lowest marks going precisely to innovation and commercial potential, 7 out of 10 in both cases, and comfort scored 8 out of 10 by him and 10 out of 10 by the clothing expert. The six archers who tried it, children, teenagers and adults, found it comfortable from the first version but asked for two specific changes: the chest guard, which was square, widened up to the shoulder, and more fabric at the top of the sleeve so that it would not restrict the draw. The 90% satisfaction the authors report does not match a whole number out of six people, the questionnaire is not reported and nobody measured the shooting: it is a comfort rating of a prototype, not evidence that the shirt helps anyone shoot better.
Also phrased as: "archery shooting shirt"; "built-in chest guard"; "technical archery clothing"; "string catching on clothing"; "arm guard sewn into the sleeve"
In practice
Archers are advised to shoot in a close-fitting top with a chest guard, because loose clothing can catch the string, and some look for technical garments that already combine the two.

Prototype shirt with a built-in foam chest guard and synthetic leather arm guard, Planters Archery Club, Medan (Indonesia): validation scores out of 100 of 83 from the archery expert and 88 from the clothing expert, both in the "very good" band; comfort 8 out of 10 from the first and 10 out of 10 from the second. The authors write that 90% of the 6 archers who tried it found it comfortable and effective, a percentage that does not correspond to a whole number out of six people.

In the two trials the 6 archers, children, teenagers and adults, ask for two changes to the first prototype: the square foam on the chest has to extend up to the shoulder according to chest size, and extra fabric is needed at the top of the sleeve so that it does not hold back the draw. The archery expert gives his lowest marks to innovation and commercial potential, 7 out of 10 each.

Status history
- 2018 Reported The only paper on the subject comes out, a prototype tried at an Indonesian club: two expert judges rate it 83 and 88 out of 100, with the lowest marks going to innovation, and six archers who try it find it comfortable but ask for two changes, the chest guard foam extended up to the shoulder and the top of the sleeve widened so that it does not hold back the draw. It is evidence on archers, but of opinion rather than measurement, from a single development project in a regional journal: the supporting evidence is there and it is limited.
