A signal telling beginners when the bow is at the right angle tightens their groups
1 study · 2 archers measured
The summary today
There is a single paper, and it is more a working demonstration than a study. In a Japanese school club, an accelerometer and a compass were fitted to the bow of a beginner with less than a year of practice; they record the tilt and direction of the bow on shots that land in the ten, and then signal when the bow comes back within one degree of that position. With the signal, the average distance between the three arrows of an end fell from 17.3 to 10.7 cm at 30 m with the light version and from 11.9 to 5.3 cm at 18 m with the sound version, over 12 ends per condition, and the variation from one end to the next shrank to about a third. The paper does not say how many archers shot, and the version of the same work published that year suggests only one; there are no statistics, the order of the two conditions is not reported, and the device was new to the person using it. It is a promising signal from one case, not a demonstration that the group tightens because of the signal.
Also phrased as: "sight level bubble"; "bow cant and grouping"; "keeping the bow upright"; "feedback on bow cant"; "aiming signal for beginners"
In practice
Beginners are told to watch the string against the bow, or a level on the sight, to keep the bow upright every time, because a canted bow sends arrows low and to the side.

Beginners with less than a year of archery from a Japanese school club, 12 ends of 3 arrows with and without a device that signals when the tilt and direction of the bow come back within one degree of those recorded on shots that landed in the ten: the geometric mean distance between the three arrows of an end falls from 17.3 cm (standard deviation 5.2) to 10.7 (1.7) at 30 m with the LED matrix mounted beside the sight, and from 11.9 (3.6) to 5.3 (1.3) at 18 m with the sound signal. The number of archers is not stated, there is no statistical test and the order of the conditions is not reported.

The version of the same work published that year in the journal of the Japanese society for engineering education reports the same test with the same figures, 17.3 against 10.7 cm and 11.9 against 5.3 cm, and describes the person who shot as a beginner with one year of practice, without giving a number: the likeliest reading is that it was a single person. These are the same data, so they do not count as a second study.

Status history
- 2012 Reported The only data arrive: a device built at a Japanese technical college signals with a light or a sound when the tilt and direction of the bow come back within one degree of those recorded on shots that landed in the ten. With the signal the average distance between the three arrows of an end falls from 17.3 to 10.7 cm at 30 m and from 11.9 to 5.3 cm at 18 m, and the variation from end to end drops to about a third. The work appears in two versions with the same figures, which count as one study. Very few participants, probably one, no statistics and a device that was new to its user: there is evidence in favour and it is minimal: reported.
